Amante del Virador
Raging wind
en la cofa del trinquete
and a neatly-captained ship
sailing out of troubled waters;
mar nueva y embravecida
salpicando ambas aletas,
reaching deep into the bulkheads.
Another lap for the stub,
a faint notion, a slight touching
of the mesmerizing currents
confunde el olor del bosque,
cambia tierra por salitre,
arriesga la pleroforia y
permuta garantías
por plenitudes inciertas,
sombras silueteadas
sobre el alma proyectada
-like autumn’s declining sun-
of the farewelling landlubbers
(who would have their ears waxed
as a scoffing for the sirens).
There is no silence in lovers.
The ship craves both wind and sea,
shore and tide fledge the shipmaster,
y no hay elección posible
entre la tierra y el cielo.

Songs are spun
on the silk loom of caresses:
though uncapable of harnessing
a soul to a mastelero
for their longitud y mena,
for their deslizarse suave,
sirven a la mar y al viento
entrelazando las velas
with the unworn music of promise.
Temiendo que las distancias
hasta el abrojo invisible
mengüen bajo la luna,
se aconseja a los vigías
mantenerse bien despiertos,
y amarrarse a los recuerdos
of forsaken wives and children,
and be careful with the rigging
(amantes del virador
y amantillos de la verga
a special matter for concern).
El pulso del navegar
is Penelope’s own craft,
the cunning trickery of art
confounding salacious suitors.
Lo que no impide que, a solas,
abandoning her aloofness,
los ojos de pedernal
que esperaron veinte años
se claven en el extraño,
reconociendo a Odiseo.
